Pure Barre Owners Attempt to Break the World Record for Largest Barre Class

It was September 2017 and organizers of the Barre on the Bridge event in Cincinnati were being awarded with the Best Pop Up of the Year honour at Pure Barre’s annual Owner’s Conference. A few months earlier, studio owners from 5 local Pure Barre studios in the Cincinnati area rounded up just over 1,000 participants to help them break the world record for the largest barre fitness class ever recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. 

The third instalment of this event aims to be the biggest yet, with local celebrities on hand, including Cincinnati-native and San Francisco 49ers Tight End, Garret Celek.

The event was created in 2016 when Pure Barre owners from the Oakley, Kenwood, Mason, Fort Wright (KY) and Westside locations wanted to come together for one goal, which is to have fun while increasing awareness about the benefits of barre fitness.

In addition to breaking a new world record, the event will also benefit Dress for Success Cincinnati with donations being accepted in the way of women’s clothing, accessories and cash at any of the Greater Cincinnati Pure Barre studios throughout the month of June and at the event on June 30.

Participants who can take any of the three classes being held that morning will also be treated to treats from local vendors including The Weekly Juicery, Whirlybird Granola and Paragon Salons.

Here are all the details you need to know!

  • The event is free and open to the public!
  • When? Saturday, June 30 – there are three classes to participate in: 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 a.m
  • Where? Purple People Bridge over the Ohio River, which connects Newport, Kentucky to downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • Bring your own mat, plus water and sunscreen for good measure.

Barre Crawl: A Review of Physique 57

Cost per single class: Varies by the city but starts at $33 USD in Beverly Hills and can go for as much as $37 in Manhattan and around $38 in Dubai.

Considered to be one of the more posh barre franchises, Physique 57 is a favourite go-to workout for celebs like Kelly Ripa, Hilaria Baldwin and Chrissy Teigen.

During a recent trip to Manhattan, I had the pleasure of trying my first Physique 57 class. I had been eager to take a class at the franchise that has been endlessly referenced in pop culture. During an episode of Girls, Allison Williams’ character Marnie uses it as an excuse to get out of helping Ray sort through his fallen friend’s belongings. “Oh, you know what I just realized? I have Physique 57 in an hour in Manhattan,” she says.


About Physique 57

Founders Tanya Becker and Jennifer Maanavi were longtime fans of the Lotte Berk technique. After their beloved Lotte Berk Method studio closed, the two partnered to form Physique 57, a now famous franchise with locations all over the globe. It’s in New York where they put down roots though and grew a large following of dedicated fans who flock to classes at any of their four Manhattan locations. I decided to check out their new SoHo digs.

First Impressions

Upon first sight, I was impressed with the size of the place. The first thought that popped into my head was how the rent for this ground floor, two-studio space must be astronomical. No wonder they charge $37 for a single class. Despite my shock of the sticker price, I learned that this is becoming the norm for Manhattan boutique fitness classes. Maybe I’ve just been spoiled back home with $25 classes.

They had a lovely retail space that featured both branded Physique 57 wear and other go-to favourites among clientele like Spiritual Gangster, Alo Yoga and Terez.

The Workout

I once watched a livestream of a class taught by Tanya Becker and was exhausted from just listening to it, so I took that as a sign that I should start with a beginner class.

Our instructor Leah Tubbs told us to grab a set of 5-pound weights. Normally I wouldn’t use that heavy a set, even for bicep work, but I grabbed a pair of 5’s and a pair of 2’s for good measure. I thought if it’s standard to grab 5-pound weights, then either everyone in here is Wonder Woman or we are going to be skipping over tricep work altoghether.

Despite the title of the class, the intro to Physique 57 was no walk in the park. Our cardio-focused class had very few breaks and we were moving throw the exercises at a vigorous pace.

Our warmup began with some high knee lifts, then we were soon picking up those heavy weights for arm work. This is where those 5-pound weights came in. I understood why it was suggested to pick up a heavier set of weights, since the arm exercises weren’t overly tiring and we didn’t focus too much on the triceps, which tend to tire easily.

Following our warmup we moved through several barre and floor exercises that targeted all the usual muscle groups.

Leah was helpful in her adjustments and made sure to come around to correct my form a few times. If I looked confused, she would make sure to adjust me into the correct position, until my alignment was just right.

The Final Verdict

I must say I had very high expectations for Physique 57 before I came in. Did it live up to expectations? I would say it did. Was the choreography as ground-breaking as their marketing suggests? No, I wouldn’t say the exercises stood out more than any other class I’ve been to before. I thought the class had a great flow and didn’t waste any time between exercises. The class is designed to push your limits and I would say it accomplished that.

Influencers Can’t Help But Pose for Pictures During the First Sloth Barre Class

Lola the sloth made dreams come true and not just for Kristen Bell. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then refer to this video here. Of all the unique barre classes I’ve come across, #slothbarre has to be the most interesting, not to mention the cutest class to date.

LA’s Barre Belle hosted the very first “sloth” barre class and made sure to document every adorable minute, thanks to the influencers who they invited to participate. Among the class-goers were Bachelor franchise alums Becca Tilley and Ashley Iaconetti, actress Ali Landry and other notable local bloggers.

Lola the sloth hung out (pun intended) during the class while participants were treated to a signature class from founder Marnie Alton.

We’re not sure how much of a workout Lola got but she sure was a hit with guests who loved getting their photo taken with her in front of a POM Wonderful step and repeat.

Some of you may have noticed a drastic shift in my content lately. In the past, I have shared my love for travel (#chaunceatravels as a reference), business and so much more but I never shared the extreme toll the frequent and oftentimes unchronicled travel and business had taken on me… With several International flights per year, working 72-hrs straight sometimes, I was neglecting “the personal me” in an effort to develop and grow “the professional me”. So… I have made a few commitments to myself in an effort to create a balance by investing generously in my mental, physical and spiritual well being as much as I do business projects. I have been so pleased with the results! In a short time, I have cultivated a few new REAL friendships, revived my relationship with the Lord and stepped outside of my comfort zone by trying new experiences like @LaBarreBelle powered by @PomWonderful. Yesterday was intense (excerpts of my experience should still be on IG Stories) – I was nervous, I wasn’t sure how well I would do but Instructor and Creator @MarnieAlton was AMAZING! She encouraged, motivated and challenged me and instead of wanting to give up, I felt the support I needed to keep going! After class I had a refreshing bottle of #PomTea with light bites as I chatted with my other Barre classmates and to top off an already amazing experience, I got to meet star @lola_the_sloth! A huge thank you to so many of you – your encouragement, support, kind comments, texts and DM’s have been so timely! Here’s to being the best we can be! How to Throw a Birthday Barre-ty

I’ve never felt completely comfortable throwing a birthday party for myself, especially since I’m creeping into my mid-thirties and the idea of throwing an adult birthday is becoming somewhat of a rarity. However, after just having had my first child, I thought why not throw one more big blowout for myself before my focus turns to my daughter and planning her birthdays for the next 14 or so years.

The idea came to me one night. What if I could throw an epic barre-themed birthday, a birthday barre-ty if you will. I immediately got to work on dreaming up what could possibly be included in such a party. Below, I’ve listed what I included. Take this list and expand on it, or come up with your own ideas. I’d love to know what you would consider including. Leave a comment below if you’re planning to throw your own bash.

The Space

What I first needed was a space. My local barre studio, Pop Physique rents out their space for private parties, so I contacted the owner to secure a date and time to host the occasion.

If you’ve got a favorite local barre studio in mind, contact them to see if they host private parties. Chances are that they do and that they would be more than happy to accommodate special requests like bringing in some champagne, serving a cake and hanging a few decorations.

Party Favors

Next you’ll need to think about what fun gift items you might want to hand out to your guests. For me, I included a pair of barre socks, barre stickers and handmade superfood snacks. Some additional ideas include: headbands, scrunchies, tank tops, cold-pressed juice and water bottles.

Treat your guests to some pampering

If you want to put your party over the top, think about bringing in a mobile spa. In order to get guests extra pumped for the class, I had Cabello by Carolina. set up a braid bar, so each guest could have their hair braided before or after class.

Serve some fun drinks after class

Once guests started to arrive and loot bags were distributed, it was time to start the class. After an hour-long class, there were glasses of champagne handed out and cake was served for guests to indulge in.

Have some fun activities for guests to do

If you have time try throwing in a fun game. For instance, who can hold the longest plank, who has the best pushup form etc. To incentivize guests think about giving away prizes to the winners of each challenge.

    Goodful’s Barre Workout Video Takes Heat for Demonstrating Poor Technique

    You may have seen an at-home barre workout video making the rounds on the internet and not necessarily for good reasons. Released by Goodful, which is a health and wellness sub-brand of BuzzFeed, the video attempts to demonstrate barre exercises you can do anywhere. The two minute video is painful to say the least. Despite the video receiving over 1M views in just two days, many people were quick to point out how sloppy and unsafe the technique being taught in the video was.

    The biggest critique of the video was the demonstration of incorrect technique, which can lead to injury if not performed correctly.

    “As a ballerina of 20+ years, please don’t do this,” commenter Sophia George wrote. “This is insulting and a terrible demonstration of these exercises. Learn to do it correctly or don’t do it at all.”

    Michaela Bloom Abbott of Barre Certification jumped in to offer up experts in ballet and fitness so viewers could see a proper demonstration with proper technique. “ ‘Go as low as you can go’ in plies is explicitly wrong and unsafe by any anatomical standpoint,” Bloom Abbot wrote. The team at Barre Certification even hosted an emergency Facebook live to break down everything that was incorrectly demonstrated in the video and what to do instead.

    Why is it Important to Perform Exercises Correctly?

    Safety is the biggest concern when demonstrating exercises. Especially when you are doing an unsupervised workout at home, you want to make sure you are finding reliable sources to learn from who know the proper cues and technique.

    Barre Certification recommends finding a video that not only shows a visual demonstration of the exercises but has complimentary audio to guide you through the cues.

    One thing the video did get right is the use of proper ballet terminology. Too bad we can’t say the same about the execution.

    Why More Barre Studios Are Adding Bounce Classes to Their Schedule

    Of all the props that have been incorporated into barre classes, a mini trampoline or rebounder as it’s sometimes called, just might be the most fun. Studios everywhere are adding “bounce” classes to their schedule as demand rises for high-intensity workouts.

    Bounce classes make use of individual mini trampolines. They are designed to tone your body, increase circulation, balance and endurance. The class format usually alternates between time on the trampoline for cardio bursts, then to the mat or barre for exercises that strengthen and lengthen.

    My Experience with Barre Bounce

    Eager to try a class myself, I took a day trip to Buffalo, New York to try out Barre Bounce at Barre Centric. Though I didn’t anticipate the class to be a cake walk, I did envision myself experiencing the same endorphin rush I would have had from a session on a trampoline as a 12-year-old. How wrong I was! Those trampolines are serious business. Even after the first minute I was pretty exhausted. Despite my serious lack of coordination, I enjoyed the 45 minutes I spent working up a sweat.

    The instructions were to push down into the mat as opposed to bouncing up, which may seem counterintuitive but this adds to the resistance and increases the challenge.

    We started off with some high-knees, followed by a series of bounces that alternated between jumping jacks and side-to-side twists. Next, we picked up our wrist weights to add another layer of difficulty. A few more bounce sequences and we were down on the ground, using the rebounder to do push-ups and tricep dips with. A similar series was repeated again but then we added some exercises at the barre for thigh work. Finally, it was time for core work on the trampoline and before I knew it we were already in the last few minutes of class, stretching out our muscles.

     

     


     

    Why the sudden interest in bounce classes?

    I wouldn’t say that bounce is a trend that has appeared out of nowhere. Incorporating the mini trampoline into workouts has been around for a long as there has been a mini trampoline to bounce on.

    Trampoline-based workouts have been part of the fitness industry since at least the late 1970s. I’ve noticed within the last year, however, that they have been gaining popularity in the barre community. I think it was just a matter of time before the barre world took notice of the benefits of bouncing and started offering barre/bounce fusion classes.

    In my opinion, I believe owners are always looking for ways to evolve their offerings. Pair that with students requesting more cardio-based workouts, and I think we’ll keep seeing new equipment being introduced into a traditional barre workout. Pure Barre’s Pure Empower class is a perfect example of this.

    BarreWell Fitness Studio out of Mission Viejo, California recently added a BOUNCE class to their weekly schedule. Owner and instructor Traci Schlotterbeck said that the technique they used is dance-based and has more cardio than a typical barre class, so she had a very good feeling that a bounce class would be well-received.

    She was right. Every class has had a waitlist since they introduced BOUNCE classes during the middle of April. “I have never seen such an awesome response to a new class format. Once you take a class, it’s easy to see why.”

    “I call my clients Cardio Queens because they are always looking to push themselves further. We are having so much fun putting together series and skills that compliment what we already love about barre and also using the trampolines to take things up a notch and get a little more gritty with it… I’ve never seen so much sweat in my studio and it’s AWESOME.”

    BarreWell’s bounce class format alternates between bouncing and sculpting as it would be very difficult to sustain a full hour on the trampoline at the intensity that students bounce with.

    She wasn’t joking about the intensity. Before trying a class, I never imagined I could get so tired from just a few exercises on the trampoline. The pace was very quick and my coordination with the music was off, so it took some getting used to.

    The adrenaline rush is addicting and there is no better way to shed fat and sculpt!

    Colorado-based Barre Forte also recently rolled out a Bar(re)bound class at their Highlands Ranch location and a BARRE TRAMP class at their Westminster location. Co-owner Nadia Walker said that “we decided to introduce bounce because it’s such an amazing high-calorie burn with the low-impact benefits that barre provides. The adrenaline rush is addicting and there is no better way to shed fat and sculpt!”

    If you need an excuse to release some stress, there is nothing more fun than bouncing on a trampoline. Not only does the trampoline provide you with a fun way to get your cardio in but you’re still strengthening and lengthening with more traditional barre exercises. If you’re looking for a high-intensity total body workout, then you’ll like bounce classes.
