Interview with Sue Costigan, Founder at Tru Barre Studio.
Locations: Akron and Medina, Ohio.

You have taught a variety of fitness classes including Pilates, Kickboxing and Strength Training. What was it about barre that motivated you to not only start instructing but open up a studio that was entirely dedicated to the exercise?

I have been in the fitness industry teaching group fitness for 31 years. I have literally tried every type of fitness class out there. I fell in love with barre after only a few classes. I could see my body changing and loved how strong I felt. I also recognized as an aging female, the number 1 thing I should focus on is strength training and maintaining the muscle I have. I also found there were many exercise modalities I couldn’t do anymore. Barre builds lean muscles and creates a beautiful physique.

What do you love most about being a business owner?

The thing I love most about owning a barre studio is the ability to offer a great workout that is so accessible to so many women. I have seen such amazing results in so many of my clients. They not only get stronger, sculpted bodies, but they become more confident and stronger in other areas of their lives.

What has been the biggest obstacle or challenge with growing your business?

We rely mostly on word of mouth, which is great because most of my clients are addicts and love to talk about barre to everyone! But, being able to tap into the community to let more people know what we have to offer is challenging. We want everyone to know about this amazing exercise and to get that body they have always desired.

What do you hope clients get out of a class?

We hope they feel successful after each class. That they can walk out of class and say “Wow, that was super hard, but I did it!!”. Our method is very adaptable. So we give many options during the workout, so you always have a chance to modify a movement or go for the challenge. We strive to teach the technique and help them understand barre is sensation driven and very internal. Once they learn our method, they actually make the workout harder on themselves.

How does the vibe at your studio differ from other studio cultures?

We have been told our studio is very welcoming. Many of my clients have been with me for many years and they understand and remember how hard it is to be a new client. Walking in that first day, not knowing what to expect or if you can handle it. They will always chat it up before or after class with a newbie to make them feel more comfortable.

What do you usually play in your studio?

Pop, Top 40

What do you love most about barre?

I love how good I feel when class is over! I feel energized, powerful and focused. It allows the client to give themselves 1 hour of complete devotion to themselves. So many of us are so busy and we don’t take needed time just for our own health. The lean legs, high lifted seat and sculpted arms and abs are a bonus too!

You currently have two studios. Do you plan to expand?

Not at this time. If the location was perfect, I may consider it. Finding instructors to teach all the classes is a concern as well.

Is there anything else you think people should know about you or the business?

It gives me great satisfaction in knowing I am delivering a product that can change so many peoples lives for the better. I am blessed to be able to do what I love every day. I love when clients tell me they look forward to working out now that they found barre. A workout that you can stick to and make a part of your lifestyle is what we hope our clients find at Tru Barre Studio. If you haven’t tried a barre class yet~ you should!

By Barre franchise information, Pure Barre No Comments

Pure Empower is coming to a Pure Barre studio near you and it promises to turn up the sweat factor. Launching on August 14, Pure Empower is a high-intensity, low impact, full body workout that combines strength training with cardio-centric circuits, according to the class description. Using your own body weight, a 6-inch step-up platform and ankle weights, the hour-long class can be modified for all levels and is a great compliment to regular Pure Barre classes.

According to instructors who have gone through the training and clients who have taken a preview class, Pure Empower is a challenging, heart-pounding experience. The class is going to eventually replace the popular Platform class, that is gradually being phased out.

Jamie, a Pure Barre Birmingham, AL client had this to say about Pure Empower on Instagram:

“Super intense, but controlled. I’ve been sore for days.”

TMPL GYM in NYC Now Offers Aqua Barre

By Barre Culture, Barre News, Exercises No Comments

If you find yourself in New York City, TMPL GYM offers AquaBarre, a 45-minute class that promises to ignite your core, sculpt your glutes and strengthen your upper body all while balancing on water. Sounds fun!

Unlike other water pilates classes that bring the barre format to the pool with noodles as a ballet barre for stability, AquaBarre takes place on the world’s first floating exercise mat (the Aquabase).

If you’ve ever taken a SURFSET Fitness class, this exercise might look familiar. Except instead of a surfboard on land, you do the full workout on a platform in the water.

The class is meant to give you an amazing foundation to master your barre practice on land. No bathing suit required, necessarily. You can wear your regular land clothing such as a tank and yoga pants if you wish.

The only downside is that it is a gym that requires a membership. However, non-members can purchase a $50 day pass. The alternative is to buy one of these AquaBase mats for a cool $700! Or just wait until more gyms start offering the class, which will probably be the case as more instructors become certified.

SHAPE Magazine recently recorded an early morning sculpt and strength AquaBarre class at TMPL GYM class for Facebook Live. Watch it here:

The World’s Most Stylish Barre Studios

By Barre franchise information, Just for Fun No Comments

The aesthetic of a studio shouldn’t matter as much as the quality of the instruction, however, in an increasingly competitive fitness landscape, the most inviting spaces are drawing in more clients over their dingy basement competitors.

More than ever, studios are putting an emphasis on design, by investing in architects and offering spa-like amenities for their clients.

The studios on this list are places we would want to escape to.

Pop Physique: The Silverlake and Westside locations in LA

Silver Lake

Address: 3501 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
In L.A.’s artsy hood lies the flagship location for Pop Physique, the ultra hip barre franchise that is slowly expanding across North America. It’s their original 4000 square foot location though, with its vine-covered exterior and beautiful hardwood floors (and ceiling) that make this one of the fitness industry’s hottest properties.

The founders of Pop Physique conceptualized a space the Creative Class could use and its apparent with its bubbly aesthetic interior that make this studio stand apart from its competitors.

Westside

Address: 12024 Venice Blvd, Mar Vista, CA
Pop Physique’s Westside location features dark bamboo floors as well as giant windows and high ceilings on the ground floor of a loft building. Having lots of natural light in this airy space is just one of the reasons why this location makes the list.

Industrial Barre:
 NE Broadway

Location: 1911 NE Broadway St, Portland, OR
At first glance you might not even be able to tell that this is a barre studio. The owners want to make you feel more like you are going to the spa than to a workout. Their approach to making their space more than just another workout studio is apparent when you walk through the doors of this Portland Studio. The interior decor lives up to its name, with recycled construction materials, metal work and branded wallpaper in gold. The lobby, which is described as “inviting” via their official website looks more like a stylish living room, suited for an upscale loft.

BarreBelle: Downtown (Mission)

Address: #103, 1812 4th Street SW, Calgary, AB
BarreBelle’s studios are so nicely appointed that we couldn’t decide which of their three locations should make the list, so we included two!

The first, their downtown Calgary location has an interesting history. It used to be a bank before it was creatively transformed into a studio. You can see remnants of the previous structure in their retail space, which is conveniently called “The Vault.”

The studio features beautiful crown molding, which serves as a natural backdrop for many Instagram photos. The bathrooms and changing area are equally stunning. On the walls, a statement mural from Vancouver’s Anewall above a highly glossed concrete floor.

The Bar Method:
 San Luis Obispo

Address: 4464 Broad St #120, San Luis Obispo, CA
The Bar Method’s San Luis Obispo location is a gorgeous lofty space that make you feel more like you are at a spa than a workout facility. On any given day, clients walk into a sun-drenched reception area, thanks to the space’s floor to ceiling windows.
