These Overlooked Qualities Could Be Your Secret Weapon to Standing Out As a Barre Instructor

By Barre Culture, Resources for Barre Instructors No Comments

So you have a barre certification, you are well-versed in the terminology, have the anatomy down pat, can cue exercises effectively and have great timing. However, there’s so much more to teaching barre than explaining exercises. If you’re looking to get hired as an instructor, or are currently instructing and want to increase your value, have you thought about what other unspoken or overlooked qualities studio owners might be looking for?

If you want to stand out as a barre instructor, here are some things to think about to help you land and maintain the gig of your dreams.

Have You Taken One of Their Classes Before?

This may seem simple but have you actually sampled their method before applying for a job there? “As a studio owner, whenever someone applies or reaches out looking for a teaching gig, the first thing I do is look up their account and see if they’ve taken classes,” says Angela Vieira of The Barre + Yoga Experience.

Making a Connection Is Everything

According to Angela Vieira, there’s so much more to being a barre instructor than being well-versed in the exercises and teaching the class. Creating a lasting relationship with your students is paramount to ensuring your class numbers build and your community grows.

She suggests breaking down the connection into three parts. Before, during and after class.

Before Class – One of the easiest but maybe overlooked things an instructor can do before class (even if it’s online) is to greet them using their name. “Introduce yourself and ask the student if they’ve taken barre before, if they have any injuries and maybe something to really develop a connection like ‘do you live around here?'” Angela suggests. “If your student is a regular still connect with them before class. You can ask how their weekend was or how they’re feeling after their last class.”

During Class – “It’s important to remember this is their workout, not yours,” Angela says. “So often I see teachers with their backs to students or face down in the mat. At that point, we’re not teaching anymore – the focus gets taken away from students and there’s nothing more disconnecting.”

She suggests making eye contact and telling students they’re doing a great job. Motivate them by using their names. Something, I personally think works really well.

After Class – Setting aside a few moments for housekeeping at the end of class is important. When the class is wrapping up, Angela suggests reminding everyone of your name and when they can take a class with you again. Answer any questions they might have too, follow-up is just as important as the introduction and the connection you make in class.

Lastly, Angela suggests checking in with as many students as you can. “I never let a student leave without saying goodbye, if I miss them, I often yell to them in the parking lot – it seems excessive but it is important!”

Mindfully Challenge Body-shaming Language

We might not even realize we’re doing it sometimes, but body-shaming language can creep into our dialogue, especially in a world with narrow beauty ideals. According to Adrienne Rabena of Barre Eclipse, one of the main things all instructors should learn is to be aware of body-shaming language. “In my online barre teacher training program, we have an entire module dedicated to ‘waking up’ to the myths we’ve been fed about health and our bodies,” Adrienne says. “In this module, we discuss how to create a truly empowering environment for students and how to use inclusive language in our instruction, too.”

Body-shaming language can be very subtle that we might not even notice that we’re making back-handed compliments. Something like “you’re so brave for wearing a crop top to class, I could never do that,” might come off as insulting. It implies that despite their size, showing skin is an act of bravery when really they should be allowed to wear whatever they feel most comfortable in.

Always Be Furthering Your Education

So you have a barre certification. Maybe you’ve also been trained in related disciplines like yoga or Pilates. What about advanced training? According to Lori Winter, the Director of Operations and Master Trainer for BarreAmped®, instructors who are motivated to continue their own education can give them an edge over other potential hires.

“Clients can tell when an instructor is simply phoning it in, as opposed to the fresh energy and new skills they bring to class after taking a workshop or advanced training,” says Lori. “If you’re an independent contractor hired by a boutique fitness studio, this is the kind of edge you want to ensure you’re the in-demand teacher who can fill up classes.”

Taking Care of Yourself Is Just as Important

In addition to your physical health, are you taking care of your mental health? “No one can pour from an empty cup,” says Lori Winter. “We teach the importance of warm-up, cool down, rest days, nourishing and fueling your body for activity, breathing well and deeply, etc.”

You Won’t Be An Effective Teacher If You’re Burnt Out

Here’s some good news! Worried that you have to take the entire class along with the clients? That can cause you to burn out and is not the best way for clients to get the most out of the class. “Overtraining can easily creep in and take over if instructors are taking the classes they’re teaching. We encourage our trainees to demo exercises, but to also come away from the teacher barre and focus on the clients in the room,” says Lori. “Do your own more intense exercise as a student when you can fully connect your mind to your body and be present.”

5 Ways to Incorporate a Rebounder Into Your Barre Routine

By Exercises 7 Comments

Barre has traditionally been a floor and mat workout, but that hasn’t stopped people from pushing the creative needle forward when it comes to how and where you can perform barre exercises.

Think about all the different ways you can take a barre class. I’ve seen aquatic-based classes, barre on paddleboards and aerial barre. One of the more common apparatus that we see being used in barre studios is the rebounder (mini-trampoline). Bounce classes as they are sometimes called have risen in popularity over the last few years, as clients are looking for ways to get in more cardio-based workouts, while not entirely deviating from their barre routine.

Outside of the floor workout, performing barre exercises on a rebounder is probably the next best-known way to perform barre exercises. Marrying a low-impact barre workout with a low-impact cardio workout through the use of an instability apparatus like a mini trampoline is one of the best full-body workouts around, since it burns a tonne of calories but is easy on your joints.

BarreAmped® has developed a program that incorporates barre moves with the use of a rebounder, called BarreAmped® BOUNCE. They have partnered with leading trampoline manufacturer JumpSport to develop a co-branded trampoline specifically for the workout, complete with a handle that is meant to mimic a wall-mounted barre. This is a unique feature of other trampolines available on the market. As a heads up, this article contains an affiliate link, so if you do feel like purchasing any products from JumpSport, consider using the link through this page. I would receive a small commission from the sale, which helps keep the lights of the site on, so I can continue bringing you all of this content!

I spoke with BarreAmped® founder and creator Suzanne Bowen to get the lowdown on the benefits of incorporating a rebounder into your regular barre routine and to find out which top five exercises from the BOUNCE program she recommends.

What are your top 5 barre-based exercises for the rebounder?

Wide Second

Wide Second targets the thighs (quads and abductors)

Big Curl to Extension

Big Curl to Extension is a dynamic core exercise that addresses both the front and back of the body.

Inclined Pull-ups

The attached handlebar on the rebounder is perfect for Inclined Pull-ups.

See Saw

See Saw is one of my favorite moves to target the hips, seat, and back of the leg

Parallel Thighs

A classic barre thigh exercise, Parallel is taken to the next level on the unstable surface of the trampoline.

What would you suggest to a barre enthusiast who is afraid of deviating from their regular, traditional barre routine?

Warm-up your muscles and get the blood flowing before your normal barre workout by bouncing for 3-5 minutes on the rebounder. Crank up your favorite playlist! Then take your workout to the trampoline. Traditional barre moves performed on the unstable surface of the rebounder take your workout to the next level! You’ll likely find that familiar exercises are a brand new challenge, especially for your feet, ankles, hips, and core.

Barre instructors and personal trainers — your clients might be intimidated at first, but starting slow and adding the rebounder is a phenomenal way to mix up your workouts and keep things fresh!

What are the benefits of using a rebounder?

Rebounding is amazing! Even low-impact, gentle bouncing is beneficial for joint health, bone density, and those with pelvic floor issues. Any intensity level will stimulate the lymphatic system (our body’s “garbage disposal” system) and offer efficient cardiovascular exercise. Plus, it’s FUN!

The Complete Guide to In-Studio and Online Barre Certification

By Barre Culture, Barre franchise information, Most requested 21 Comments

There are many certifications out there, both in-person and online, but not all barre certifications are made equal. This guide is intended to give you an overview of all known certifications that are open to everyone, who they are hosted by and what you will get for your hard-earned money and time. What’s not included in this list are certifications that are provided by barre franchises that require you to teach their specific method once you are certified. For instance, if you are trained by Pure Barre, it’s assumed that you will be teaching at Pure Barre.

Have you done any of the certifications below and want to weigh in on who offers the best training? Leave a comment below. Full disclosure, there are a couple affiliate links on this page. It helps keep this website’s lights on.

Franchise-specific Training

I should also mention that larger brands like Pure Barre, Barre3 and The Bar Method all have their own training. I didn’t include them in the list because unlike many of the universal certifications mentioned above that would allow you to teach anywhere, the franchise-specific certifications are technically not accessible to the public. The assumption is that if you are being taught their technique then you would be teaching it after you “test out” as they say.

You’ll be taught their specific program and would most likely be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Pure Barre, for example, asks for instructor manuals back once an instructor has decided that they would no longer like to teach at a Pure Barre location.
