The Complete Guide to In-Studio and Online Barre Certification

By Barre Culture, Barre franchise information, Most requested 21 Comments

There are many certifications out there, both in-person and online, but not all barre certifications are made equal. This guide is intended to give you an overview of all known certifications that are open to everyone, who they are hosted by and what you will get for your hard-earned money and time. What’s not included in this list are certifications that are provided by barre franchises that require you to teach their specific method once you are certified. For instance, if you are trained by Pure Barre, it’s assumed that you will be teaching at Pure Barre.

Have you done any of the certifications below and want to weigh in on who offers the best training? Leave a comment below. Full disclosure, there are a couple affiliate links on this page. It helps keep this website’s lights on.

Certified by Barreworks

Length:

75 hours

Location:

Online with occasional in-person workshops. Most offline events are conducted in and around Toronto and Montreal, Canada.

Cost:

CAD $1195 per person. They occasionally offer early bird savings for their training program, so be on the lookout for discounts.

The Claim:

They offer immersive and effective training from instructors who have more than a couple decades of experience combined. I used to go to Barreworks classes in Toronto when they had two studio locations, so I can personally vouch that their classes are safe and effective.

I was given access to their training program for a week to see what it was all about. The course was very comprehensive, especially regarding anatomy and exercise science. I appreciated that they focused on safety and modifications for each exercise.

Also, they regularly offer a BIPOC scholarship, awarding $1000 to the successful recipient. This will go toward the full tuition fee for an in-studio Barre Certified by Barreworks course. The recipient’s investment is $395 + hst. Go to their website for more details.

Franchise-specific Training

I should also mention that larger brands like Pure Barre, Barre3 and The Bar Method all have their own training. I didn’t include them in the list because unlike many of the universal certifications mentioned above that would allow you to teach anywhere, the franchise-specific certifications are technically not accessible to the public. The assumption is that if you are being taught their technique then you would be teaching it after you “test out” as they say.

You’ll be taught their specific program and would most likely be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Pure Barre, for example, asks for instructor manuals back once an instructor has decided that they would no longer like to teach at a Pure Barre location.

Denver

Barre City: Denver, Colorado

By Barre City Spotlight, Barre3, Pure Barre, The Bar Method No Comments

When you’re a city that’s surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, there’s no shortage of gorgeous ski resorts, golf courses and hiking trails. However, as much as there is an abundance of outdoor activity to keep you occupied, people in Denver head into any of the two dozen barre studios in Denver and the surrounding area.

From familiar chains like Pure Barre, The Bar Method and Barre3 to local favourites like Barre Forte and The Ballet Physique, Denver offers residents more than two dozen options to choose from.

So what makes Denver a barre-loving city? Let’s explore what Denver has to offer.

Why is Denver Considered a Barre City?

It’s (partly) home to Pure Barre

Not only will you find a handful of Pure Barre studios throughout the Denver area, but the city is also the home to their corporate headquarters. The head office is where they run operations for the company, for the nearly 500 locations across North America.

Though there is a corporate training facility in Spartanburg, SC, Denver is also home to a training center for instructors and studio owners.

The studio is like a second home for regulars

When I went out to Denver in early February, I got to see first-hand how passionate locals are for the barre workout. At every studio I stopped into you could see how connected the community was with their local studios. It wasn’t just the workout that was drawing people in. Regulars were gabbing with each other before class and were hanging around the studio up to 30 minutes after a class ended to connect with the owners, instructors and other students. Classes were full and some even had wait lists.

There’s a studio on every corner

Okay, I’m exaggerating a little but boutique fitness studios are everywhere in Denver and barre is right up there in popularity with yoga, pilates and crossfit. No matter which part of the city you are in, you are most likely a stone’s throw away from a studio. The high concentration of studios is even more obvious in the suburbs. In Highlands Ranch alone, there are four different studios within a few miles of each other. When I visited, Studio Barre was just about to open their doors in Highlands Ranch.

The #KICKSEAT Campaign Shines the Spotlight on Inspiring Females

By Barre Culture No Comments

One thing I love about the barre community is that it is so inclusive. In the studio and online, I find myself being able to easily connect with others over our shared interest of barre.

There are so many inspiring women in this community. I’ve seen instructors go out of their way to help their clients achieve their fitness goals. I’ve seen my fellow peers become beyond dedicated to making sure they are living a healthy, fulfilling life. That drive is inspiring, so it’s about time that we call out some of these leaders and boss women.

Online retailer EDJE Activ is inviting you to recognize the inspiring women in your community with their #KICKSEAT campaign. The real driving force behind this campaign is to recognize as many women as possible in local communities who are always doing a little extra. The campaign which runs from July 1 – September 30 will be recognizing amazing women all Summer long, so make sure you follow along with the #KICKSEAT hashtag on Instagram.

I’m thrilled that they asked The Barre Blog to help kick things off. So without further ado, let’s kick off the #KICKSEAT campaign. I’m going to bring attention to three amazing individuals in the barre community and beyond who inspire me and inspire others with their drive.

Family First

First up, my sister Jennifer. Not only do I share similar DNA with my sister but our bond has grown even closer over the years. I am inspired by her desire to continually improve. While recently completing her yoga certification, I saw first-hand how dedicated she was to fulfilling this dream. She spent every other weekend for four months crafting her technique and working toward her certification.

More importantly, she is a great friend. Whether you have known her since kindergarten, or have recently been introduced to Jen, she makes you feel like you have known each other forever. At her bachelorette last year, her girlfriends were given the chance to share a nice memory of Jen. Each friend spoke of her kindness, loyalty, strength and ability to make others feel good about themselves just because they have the privilege of knowing her. That’s a quality I admire and why I think she deserves to be recognized.

Two women walking in Brooklyn

The second female I would love for you to all know is my fearless sister-in-law, Tara. She represents everything that this campaign is all about. She is selfless beyond belief and anyone who comes in contact with her is better off because of being able to be around her.

It’s not uncommon for her to bend over backwards to help others even if she’s six months pregnant. She is always thinking of others, including myself. She always checks in with me on Mother’s Day to remind me that my mom is present in spirit even if she is not physically with us anymore. It’s the little things that you don’t think make a difference, but they do. For that reason I think Tara deserves some public recognition.

The Fearless Entrepreneur

Finally, I would like to recognize Barre Forte Founder Nadia Walker. I first met Nadia when I was doing a feature about Barre Forte for the blog. I had the privilege of meeting her in person this past February when I went out to Denver to meet her and the Barre Forte team.

I am in awe of the faithful following she has built. When I took one of her classes, I observed the camaraderie she has with her students, who clearly have come to love her, the brand she has built up and the barre workout that mirrors her personality.

It was so obvious to me how passionate she is about what she does. You can hear it in her voice, in the way she talks about her love for barre, her students and her colleagues. That is why Nadia is my third #KICKSEAT woman.

Who Would You Nominate for the #KICKSEAT Campaign?

Now it’s your turn. I invite you to pass it forward. Who would you nominate for the #KICKSEAT campaign? Tag three friends on Instagram with the #KICKSEAT hashtag to let the amazing women in your life know that they rock your world.

Why More Barre Studios Are Adding Bounce Classes to Their Schedule

By Barre Culture, Barre News, Exercises No Comments

Of all the props that have been incorporated into barre classes, a mini trampoline or rebounder as it’s sometimes called, just might be the most fun. Studios everywhere are adding “bounce” classes to their schedule as demand rises for high-intensity workouts.

Bounce classes make use of individual mini trampolines. They are designed to tone your body, increase circulation, balance and endurance. The class format usually alternates between time on the trampoline for cardio bursts, then to the mat or barre for exercises that strengthen and lengthen.

My Experience with Barre Bounce

Eager to try a class myself, I took a day trip to Buffalo, New York to try out Barre Bounce at Barre Centric. Though I didn’t anticipate the class to be a cake walk, I did envision myself experiencing the same endorphin rush I would have had from a session on a trampoline as a 12-year-old. How wrong I was! Those trampolines are serious business. Even after the first minute I was pretty exhausted. Despite my serious lack of coordination, I enjoyed the 45 minutes I spent working up a sweat.

The instructions were to push down into the mat as opposed to bouncing up, which may seem counterintuitive but this adds to the resistance and increases the challenge.

We started off with some high-knees, followed by a series of bounces that alternated between jumping jacks and side-to-side twists. Next, we picked up our wrist weights to add another layer of difficulty. A few more bounce sequences and we were down on the ground, using the rebounder to do push-ups and tricep dips with. A similar series was repeated again but then we added some exercises at the barre for thigh work. Finally, it was time for core work on the trampoline and before I knew it we were already in the last few minutes of class, stretching out our muscles.

Why the sudden interest in bounce classes?

I wouldn’t say that bounce is a trend that has appeared out of nowhere. Incorporating the mini trampoline into workouts has been around for a long as there has been a mini trampoline to bounce on.

Trampoline-based workouts have been part of the fitness industry since at least the late 1970s. I’ve noticed within the last year, however, that they have been gaining popularity in the barre community. I think it was just a matter of time before the barre world took notice of the benefits of bouncing and started offering barre/bounce fusion classes.

In my opinion, I believe owners are always looking for ways to evolve their offerings. Pair that with students requesting more cardio-based workouts, and I think we’ll keep seeing new equipment being introduced into a traditional barre workout. Pure Barre’s Pure Empower class is a perfect example of this.

BarreWell Fitness Studio out of Mission Viejo, California recently added a BOUNCE class to their weekly schedule. Owner and instructor Traci Schlotterbeck said that the technique they used is dance-based and has more cardio than a typical barre class, so she had a very good feeling that a bounce class would be well-received.

She was right. Every class has had a waitlist since they introduced BOUNCE classes during the middle of April. “I have never seen such an awesome response to a new class format. Once you take a class, it’s easy to see why.”

“I call my clients Cardio Queens because they are always looking to push themselves further. We are having so much fun putting together series and skills that compliment what we already love about barre and also using the trampolines to take things up a notch and get a little more gritty with it… I’ve never seen so much sweat in my studio and it’s AWESOME.”

A member of the BarreWell team poses for a photo, advertising their new bounce class.

BarreWell’s bounce class format alternates between bouncing and sculpting as it would be very difficult to sustain a full hour on the trampoline at the intensity that students bounce with.

She wasn’t joking about the intensity. Before trying a class, I never imagined I could get so tired from just a few exercises on the trampoline. The pace was very quick and my coordination with the music was off, so it took some getting used to.

The adrenaline rush is addicting and there is no better way to shed fat and sculpt!

Colorado-based Barre Forte also recently rolled out a Bar(re)bound class at their Highlands Ranch location and a BARRE TRAMP class at their Westminster location. Co-owner Nadia Walker said that “we decided to introduce bounce because it’s such an amazing high-calorie burn with the low-impact benefits that barre provides. The adrenaline rush is addicting and there is no better way to shed fat and sculpt!”

Members of the Barre Forte team relax after a Bar(re)bound class.

If you need an excuse to release some stress, there is nothing more fun than bouncing on a trampoline. Not only does the trampoline provide you with a fun way to get your cardio in but you’re still strengthening and lengthening with more traditional barre exercises. If you’re looking for a high-intensity total body workout, then you’ll like bounce classes.

Have you tried a bounce class before? Was it love at first bounce? What did you think? Let us know in the comments section.
