The Ultimate Girl Power Playlist to Get You Pumped for the Barre

By Barre Culture, Just for Fun No Comments

Whenever I need a female empowerment anthem to get pumped up, I think of the Spice Girls with their girl power message or Beyonce’s fierceness. However, there are so many fun, female-focused songs by some kick ass women that should also be recognized.

Get the full playlist here:

Spice Girls – Never Give Up On The Good Times

Let’s start with the pop group who rose to fame on the idea of girl power, the Spice Girls. Though Never Give Up On The Good Times might not be the quintessential anthem about female empowerment, it is a fun one that will get you pumped up before or at your next workout.

Beyonce – Run the World (Girls)

This song might be the most appropriate song for this list. I just love the lyric about women being strong enough to bear children and then getting back to business.

The Pussycat Dolls – I Don’t Need A Man

This is a song about not needing a man for happiness and we love it. Sing it ladies!

Destiny’s Child – Independent Women

Destiny’s Child were known for empowering women but perhaps their best known female anthem was the millennium hit that came from the soundtrack for Charlie’s Angels.

Britney Spears – Stronger

Brit’s songs in the early 2000s were generally more about relationships than girl power but this song told girls to stand on their own two feet and that’s why we think it should be included in the list.

Meghan Trainor – No

We love this song for telling women that you can tell men to take a hike and that’s why we think it should be included on this list.

Katy Perry – Roar

Of the many female-focused hits in Katy’s discography we could have included, Roar stands above the rest as a real uplifting song. Special shout out to the song Firework which could have easily been substituted for Roar on this list.

Christina Aguilera – Fighter

Christina gets us into fighting form with this 2002 hit.

Demi Lovato – Confident

Demi came back onto the scene in 2015 with a vengeance with the release of her appropriately titled album Confident. Her most empowering track is of the same name.

Aretha Franklin – Respect

We can’t not include this classic from the queen of gospel, Ms. Aretha Franklin. The timeless hit still holds up today.

Rachel Platten – Fight Song

There’s a reason why Hilary Clinton chose this song as her campaign theme song. Though she didn’t win the election, we still enjoyed hearing it at her rallies.

Kelly Clarkson – Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)

We love this rockin’ anthem from Kelly Clarkson off of her 5th studio album, also of the same name.

Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive

A classic girl power disco anthem. We love this song for its lyrics just as much as it gets us dancing.

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

Taylor says it best in this song about confidence, just shake it off.

Shania Twain – Man! I Feel Like A Woman

This Shania classic might have been our go-to pre-drinking anthem but it also works as a good song to get pumped up to during a workout.

Hailee Steinfeld – Love Myself

We couldn’t agree more Hailee, love yourself before anyone else.

Eurythmics, Aretha Franklin – Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves

Annie Lennox’s feminist hit is made even more powerful with help from the gospel queen, Aretha Franklin on the track.

Fifth Harmony – BO$$ (BOSS)

The sassy lyrics in this song make us want to earn “Oprah dollars” too!

TMPL GYM in NYC Now Offers Aqua Barre

By Barre Culture, Barre News, Exercises No Comments

If you find yourself in New York City, TMPL GYM offers AquaBarre, a 45-minute class that promises to ignite your core, sculpt your glutes and strengthen your upper body all while balancing on water. Sounds fun!

Unlike other water pilates classes that bring the barre format to the pool with noodles as a ballet barre for stability, AquaBarre takes place on the world’s first floating exercise mat (the Aquabase).

If you’ve ever taken a SURFSET Fitness class, this exercise might look familiar. Except instead of a surfboard on land, you do the full workout on a platform in the water.

The class is meant to give you an amazing foundation to master your barre practice on land. No bathing suit required, necessarily. You can wear your regular land clothing such as a tank and yoga pants if you wish.

The only downside is that it is a gym that requires a membership. However, non-members can purchase a $50 day pass. The alternative is to buy one of these AquaBase mats for a cool $700! Or just wait until more gyms start offering the class, which will probably be the case as more instructors become certified.

SHAPE Magazine recently recorded an early morning sculpt and strength AquaBarre class at TMPL GYM class for Facebook Live. Watch it here:

Would you try an AquaBarre class or do you prefer to stay out of the water? Leave a comment below to let us know.

It is super hard and uses many ballet moves,” Kaling told The Chalkboard Mag in 2014. “I always pretend I’m Natalie Portman in Black Swan while doing it.” So do we Mindy, so do we!

Is Portland the Barre Capital of the World?

By Barre Culture, Barre3, Just for Fun, Pure Barre One Comment
Hundreds turn out to Barre3 in the Park, in barre capital Portland.

Hundreds turn out to Barre3 in the Park.

Could Portland, Oregon be the barre capital of the world? Now before you say, “What about New York or LA?” Hear me out. Yes, LA alone has at least 6 Pure Barre studios in the city and immediate surrounding area. However, they also have a large enough population to support a franchise in nearly every neighbourhood. Relatively, Portland has a population of about 609,000, which is one-sixth the size of Los Angeles and yet they are home to more than a dozen barre-specific studios.

No doubt the biggest player in Portland is Barre3, one of the major barre businesses in the fitness game. Along with their flagship studio and headquarters, they have five additional studios, hosting an average 280 classes per week.

It’s not unusual to see hundreds came out to their annual Barre3 in the Park event, or wake up at the crack of dawn to attend a class before sunrise at any one of their 6 locations each week.

The city is also home to Pure Barre, The Bar Method and Xtend Barre, 3 locations from Portland barre franchise Industrial Barre and some independents like The Pilates Barre and Mod Physique. That is roughly one barre studio for every 43,000 people. No matter which neighbourhood you live in, you’re more likely than not to be a stone’s throw away from a barre business.

Whether or not you agree with Portland being the barre capital of the world, there is no denying that Portland is full of barre fanatics.

Why is barre so popular in this mid-size city?

Is a Portlander more likely to value physical activity? Are they ahead of the curve? I have a feeling that Portland might be a more fit conscious community but if someone from Portland could chime in, that would be great.

Do you think Portland is the barre capital of the world, or would you give bragging rights to another city? Let us know in the comments.

Ellie Kemper Teaches Ellen The Bar Method

By Barre Culture, Barre3 No Comments

Apparently Anna Kendrick is a fan of Pure Barre, while Natalie Portman spent 8 hours a day for 6 days a week at the barre, to prepare for her role in Black Swan.

For actress Ellie Kemper, she turns to The Bar Method to get into shape. On a recent appearance of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellie Kemper taught Ellen some valuable barre moves. Hilarity and shaking ensues! Have a watch.

Why is Ellie Kemper a Fan of The Bar Method?

What attracted the Kimmy Schmidt star to the barre? She was quoted in a SELF article saying that she used The Bar Method and SoulCycle for triathlon training. She would use these classes to complement her running.

In a 2016 interview with nymag.com, Ellie also had this to say about The Bar Method:

“For strength, I’ll do a lot of Bar Method classes, but I don’t get as much of an adrenaline rush. I’m not all jazzed up. It’s a totally different kind of exercise, and especially for toning and strengthening. I haven’t done enough yoga.”

Are there any other notable celebs who are fans of The Barre Method or barre in general, that you know of? Leave us a comment below.
